On January 1, 2011, Ohio's minimum wage will increase 10 cents to $7.40 per hour. This increase applies to all Ohio employers with 2010 annual gross receipts of $271,000 or more. The new Ohio Law does not apply to companies with gross receipts below $271,000. Those companies should continue to pay the federal minimum wage of $7.25 per hour.  Likewise, employees under the age of 16, regardless of where they work, are not entitled to Ohio's higher rate and should be paid $7.25 per hour under the federal law.

Wages for tipped employees increase five cents per hour to $3.70 before tips.  According to the Ohio Department of Commerce a tipped employee, "includes any employee who engages in an occupation in which he/she regularly receives more than $30.00 per month in tips."

If you have not already done so, be sure to update employee wages to comply with the changes and make sure all compliance posters are up-to-date.
